Wärtsilä to help create a fully-electric 11,000-tonne ship

The Finnish company Wärtsilä specialises in all-electric and hybrid drive systems for commercial shipping projects, as shown here. Many of the innovations could eventually find their way into large yachts.

In a move that could herald a new generation of (almost) zero-emission superyachts, the Finnish marine energy specialist Wärtsilä is to supply a hybrid-electric propulsion system for a new-build limestone carrier, due for completion in 2026.
