Flexiteek 3 - the latest generation of synthetic marine decking

Flexiteek International is excited to announce its new generation of synthetic teak decking, Flexiteek 3, which was immediately nominated by a jury of leading global design experts for the prestigious DAME Design Awards at Metstrade in November.

Flexiteek was founded in 2000 to revolutionise the traditional marine decking market. The launch of Flexiteek 2G in 2014 established a new standard for synthetic decking with many market-leading and enhanced benefits.

Flexiteek 3 has been created to develop the performance and sustainability of Flexiteek decks and provide the appearance of real teak, with beautiful graining detail and colour options that mimic the natural ageing process of teak.

The new third generation is their most sustainable decking yet, produced with bio-attributed PVC, which is a renewable material that creates up to 80% less greenhouse gases than fossil-based PVC found in other products. It is also created with REACH-compliant phthalate-free plasticisers with a low migratory performance, and it is 100% recyclable after use. By using the latest technology and production processes, Flexiteek strives to innovate and evolve to meet the future needs of boat owners and OEMs.

Tomas Gustafsson, CEO of Flexiteek International, commented, “We are excited to release Flexiteek 3, especially at a show as central to the marine industry as METSTRADE. Our new third generation offers enhanced durability, improved aesthetics, and greater sustainability, meeting the evolving needs of our customers and we are delighted to be shortlisted for the Dame Design Awards this year.”

Flexiteek 3 - our latest advancement in synthetic decking

Flexiteek 3 has five main colours: Teak, Scrubbed, Bleached, Weathered and the new Ash option. Plus six dark wood colours of Walnut, Vintage and Charcoal, and monochrome colours of Grey, Carbon, and Off-White. It cools up to 30% faster than other synthetic decking products and at 4.5kg/m2, it is up to 35% lighter than other composite decking alternatives.

Flexiteek 3 is available in a thinner 3.5mm option, reducing the weight for multihulls and performance boats. We have collaborated with 3M to create a new ‘peel and stick’ option, which helps to reduce the installation time for OEMs by removing the time needed for adhesives to cure. Allowing boat owners to walk on their new deck almost immediately.

Sustainable replacement for teak and less environmentally friendly plastics

Flexiteek 3 is produced with bio-attributed PVC, a renewable material that creates up to 80% less greenhouse gases than fossil-based PVC found in other products. The bio-attributed PVC raw material is created from Tall Oil from trees. This exploits existing waste material from renewable sources of wood so that we are not removing trees for the process of creating bio-attributed PVC. It is created with REACH-compliant phthalate-free plasticisers with a low migratory performance and is 100% recyclable after use.

Flexiteek has planted nearly 45,000 trees in endangered habitats around the world in partnership with World Land Trust. Our work helps to protect locations typically devasted by teak wood and other endangered tropical hardwood farming. We also support Ocean Cleanup, with donations to help to remove harmful plastics from the world’s oceans and rivers.

Flexiteek 3 offers major maintenance benefits enabling a reduction in the use of cleaning products by around 80%

Flexiteek 3 also offers environmental benefits in operation, as Tomas explains: ”We have created Flexiteek 3 to help improve the maintenance of our synthetic decks. By doing this we have reduced the need for cleaning products by about 80%, as most daily stains and spills can be removed with fresh water. A pressure washer is a good way to remove more stubborn stains without the need for chemicals.”
